Richard H. Groshong, Jr.,
We are very fortunate to have Rick as our Senior Geological Advisor. Rick has a BS from Bucknell University, MA from the University of Texas at Austin and a PhD from Brown University. After leaving Brown he taught at Syracuse University, then moved to the Cities Service Oil Company (now part of Occidental) where he was manager of structural research. He left Cities to join the University of Alabama where he became professor of structural geology and is now professor emeritus. He has taught a variety of courses for PetroSkills (formerly OGCI), including structural styles, balanced cross sections, and subsurface mapping.
As a researcher, Rick has been involved with strain and folds for many years. He developed the calcite strain gauge technique (1972) and used it to measure the grain-scale strain in folds (1975, 1981, 1984). He has a long-standing interest in low-temperature deformation mechanisms (1988, 2004). He became involved with kinematic modeling (1988, 1990, 1993, 2006, 2009). In 1993 and 1994 he and Jean-Luc Epard developed the area-depth-strain (ADS) method. In recent years he has applied this method to a variety of examples (2012, 2014, 2015). He is the author of the textbook 3-D structural Geology (2006). He has won best paper awards for papers in the Intergas ’95 International Unconventional Gas Symposium (1995), GCAGS Bulletin (1998), and Interpretation (2014).
Professionally Rick has been Chairman of the Structure and Tectonics Division of the Geological Society of America, an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer, lead editor for two special issues of the Journal of Structural Geology, and is currently a Senior Associate Editor for structural geology for the AAPG Bulletin.
